If I'm honest I wasn't really aware you could buy ready meals for kids! I'd also never heard of Nanna Kay, so it was interesting to read a little bit about the company on Twitter and Facebook. I also love the company name - My nana was always a nana, so it makes me a little bit nostalgic.
Nanna Kays have created a range of ready meals aimed to reduce levels of sugar, salt and saturated fats within children's meals.
As the Little Man is still too young for the range at the moment, hubby and I tried these and my friends two kids who are 4 and 5 had a taste when they came to ours - sadly we had some photo issues and the pictures of the meals on a plate have disappeared!
The ready meals look like standard ready meals, and don't appear too small in portion size. They are freezer friendly and can be heated up easily in the microwave.
Macaroni & Cheese The Macaroni and Cheese is from the Infant range which is designed for children aged 1-4 and costs £2.75 to buy. Despite the fact the meal had been microwaved the pasta stayed soft, in a reasonably thick cheese sauce. It looked pleasant and tasty, the only concern was, it looked quite greasy. There's a layer of oil on the top after its defrosted and cooked - presumably the cheese in the sauce, but that didn't stop it being tasty and its definitely palatable for an infant. Beef Lasagne The Beef Lasagne is from the Junior range which is designed for children aged 5-10, and costs £3.25. Obviously in the pictures you can see it looks nothing like the picture on the packaging, so I wasn't expecting too much. The lasagne though was actually delicious. There was plenty of creamy sauce (theres nothing worse than a dry lasagne) and the lasagne sheets were soft and tasty. It tasted a lot like my own home made lasagne, presumably some of the same spices are used. Meatballs & Pasta This was our least favorite from the selection we were sent to try. It's a Junior meal, that costs £3.25. Although the meatballs were really tasty (they tasted as if they'd just been made from scratch and put right in front of us) the sauce was a bit of a let down. It was very watery and messy, definitely not a meal to eat wearing a white top. The sauce didn't taste bad, it actually had quite a nice herby taste, it was simply too thin and didn't really go with the rest of the meal. I think if the sauce was a little thicker this would be one of the best meals! Cottage Pie The Cottage Pie is from the Junior range and costs £3.25 to buy. This was without a doubt our favorite. It was surprisingly topped with delicious sweet potato which made it even tastier. The meat was really nice and it had lots of additional veg in amongst it. I loved the fact it had sweet potato instead of the usual mash, it made it taste so much nicer. Overall I am very impressed with the products. They're tasty, provide a good portion size and don't contain any nasty additives. They taste a lot better than I could make myself if I'm honest. I would be perfectly happy feeding these to The Little Man. The meals are only currently available from Nanna Kay’s where there's a minimum order of £49.95. Sadly I wouldn't have the freeze space to order than many meals, but if you could find some other interested parents you could split an order. *I was sent the meals free of charge to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own*
