When I heard that Nanking’s latest offering in Cyberhub, Gurgaon is not up to the mark, I was worried. The worry was confirmed when I go to Nanking for lunch with my friends from Gurgaon Foodie group.
Upon reaching Nanking, I am informed that the dim sum lunch is not available because the Chinese chefs have gone back to China because of the Chinese New Year, I am seriously worried. This means that some novice sous chefs will be at the helm. But it is lunchtime and we are hungry so there is no turning back now. So we soldier on and place our orders.
My worst fears turn real when the food starts arriving. The prawns are conspicuous by their absence in the prawn Hot and Sour soup (Rs 140). The Man Chow soup (Rs 140) that others are having on the table is somewhat better. The dim sums are competent but not memorable. Lotus stem sweet and spicy (Rs 275) has to be sent back because it is too tart to eat.
In the main course, the kung pao chicken (Rs 435) is listless. It becomes somewhat edible when I add lots of mustard and vinegar green chilly to it. Clay Pot rice (Rs 375) is nothing but steamed rice. The only saving grace is the roast pork mushrooms bamboo shoot (Rs 380) and the flat rice noodles (somewhat like pad thai; Rs 375). So all of us enjoy these two dishes and these are the only ones that are polished off.
You know when a meal has not been good when everyone has left something on their plate, which precisely is the case here.
The meal has been one of the most disappointing ones I have had in the recent past. Not planning to recommend Nanking or going back to it in the near future.
The pictures are from my earlier visit to Nanking
