Nails: See some answers about the health of your nails.
No one wants brittle, discolored or thick nails from infection or poor care. And many people like the look of colorful, glittery nails with a thick coat of polish.
Do your nails need to "breathe" between manicures or polish applications?
Nails do not need surface access to air because they get oxygen and nutrients from your blood. Keeping nails hydrated is important if your nails are prone to breakage and a break from polishing to moisturize would help.
What types of varnish are best?
Choose polishes with more natural ingredients. Avoid harsh additives such as formaldehyde. Certain ingredients in hardened shellac polishes and false nails are known to cause skin rashes, inflammation, and itching, called dermatitis. These nail applications can cause brittleness, which leads to greater susceptibility to injury and infection.
How can you repair damaged nails?
The bacteria can lead to permanent nail damage and can cause strange or painful nails. If the bacteria continues to fester, you may lose a nail, and the infection could eventually attack your bone. Recent research shows that a type of collagen supplement pill called Verisol can improve nail growth and reduce brittleness, and I plan to offer the treatment to patients with nail problems.
Other tips for healthy nails:
- If you do a job or task that requires your hands to be in water a lot, try to wear protection to limit exposure of your hands.
- Avoid regularly using harsh soaps to wash your hands. Choose gentle formulas.
- Read about the side effects of your medications because some can alter nail growth.
- And there's this tried-and-true tip you've heard before: A healthy diet helps maintain healthy skin and nails.
