A few days ago the internet went wild when it discovered one metallic monolith mysteriously standing in the middle of the Utah desert. The rumor mill discovered by the Utah Department of Public Safety began to work quickly. Was it aliens? 2001: A Space Odyssey brought to life?
Thanks to some particularly dedicated Reddit users, we now know that the chances of it being something alien are slim (although we could all agree that 2020 would have been the year if it happened).
The Redditors were able to isolate the approximate location of the monolith and trace the flight paths of Utah Public Safety's helicopters to triangulate a rough area near Canyonlands National Park and the Colorado River. After the approximate location was narrowed down, the internet experts went to Google Earth to isolate the coordinates and find out when the monolith first appeared.
Historical imagery showed that the monolith arrived sometime between August 2015 and October 2016, leaving a fairly large void open. Around that time, the epic science fiction drama Westworld was shooting nearby, so the best bet right now is that someone on the crew either didn't pack properly or maybe even used the metal to play a Kubrick-inspired prank on the world.
The location has also been used in a number of other TV shows and films, from more recent films like 127 Hours and Mission: Impossible 2, which date back to classic westerns in the 1940s and 1960s - although the odds of westerns leaving a 10 -12 foot long metal monolith is about as unlikely as the alien scenario.
Authorities are urging people not to go to the monolith themselves as they may be stranded in the desert and need to be rescued.
