A low pitched sound, called the "Hum" is slowly driving people crazy across the globe, reported in Taos, N.M.; Bristol, England; and Largs, Scotland.
The mysterious sound usually is heard by people who are ages 55 to 70, according to a 2003 study, and an approximate two percent of the population, living in a "Hum" zone can hear it. People who hear the "hum" are called "hearers" or "hummers" and say the sound is like a diesel engine idling nearby and is driving them crazy.
Katie Jacques of Leeds, England describes her reaction to the near constant sound by stating "It's a kind of torture; sometimes, you just want to scream." She continues on to say ""It's worst at night. It's hard to get off to sleep because I hear this throbbing sound in the background … You're tossing and turning, and you get more and more agitated about it."
Those that hear the hum also complain of complain of headaches, nausea, dizziness, nosebleeds and sleep disturbances and one death by suicide has been attributed to the "Hum."
