Blogging Marathon# 60: Week 3/ Day 1 Theme: Regional Specials Dish: Mysone Kattina Saaru
We are starting 3rd week of blogging marathon today and my theme for the week is 'Regional Specials'. I chose Mysore as my region and I have 3 delicious dishes from there.
Simple Toor dal Saaru Vani who blogs at Mysoorean has a ton of authentic dishes from Mysore. After a lot of browsing on her site, I found this simple dal recipe that only needed few ingredients which was perfect because I only had a couple of veggies left in the fridge and it was time to go grocery shopping.
The chaaru that I make at home usually has tamarind in it but this one has lemon juice instead. It is a quick and easy dish that is homey and comforting.
Recipe adapted from Mysoorean: Mysore Kattina Saaru Ingredients:
  • ½cup Toor dal
  • ½tsp Turmeric
  • 1tsp Oil
  • 1tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1tsp Cumin seeds
  • ¼tsp Asafoetida
  • 8~10 Curry leaves
  • 2~3 Green Chilies
  • 2tbsp Lemon juice
  • To taste Salt
Method:
  1. If you have time, soak toor dal for 30~40 minutes. Pressure cook with enough water until very tender.
  2. Add 1~11/2cups of water and whisk the cooked dal until smooth. Add the turmeric and salt to dal.
  3. Heat oil in a small pan, add mustard and cumin seeds, once the seeds start to splutter add asafoetida, green chilies and curry leaves.
  4. Add the tempering to the dal mixture. Finally stir in the lemon juice and serve with some hot steamed rice.
