My Seven Year Old and the Big Bang Theory

Hello everyone, I hope all is well with you. I took a break last week and reblogged a previous post. Life gets busy sometimes. :) However, I’m back today and I’m sharing an interesting conversation I had with my youngest son. We watch the Universe channel quite a bit and we’ve seen a couple of shows discussing the Big Bang Theory and the creation of the Earth.

So, I wasn’t surprised when I picked up my kids from school and he asked me, “Mom, where did the earth come from?”

I responded. “Well, there are two theories. One is the Big Bang Theory…”

“And the other is God,” he piped in.

“That’s right.”

“Which one is right?” He asked with a perplexed look on his face.

“We don’t know. That’s why they’re called theories. We can’t prove either one.”

“Hmmm…”

“You get to choose which one you believe,” I said as I glanced in the rearview mirror. “But I have another theory. Do you want to hear it?”

“Yeah.”

“I think God orchestrated the Big Bang.”

It was as if a light bulb went off. His eyes brightened and a big smile broke out on his face. “I think you’re right.”

It was a great moment. I reinforced both theories at the same time and I think it could be true. Why not? I hope I also illustrated that we don’t have to accept theories just as they’re presented to us. We can think about them and draw our own conclusions. I’m trying to grow critical thinkers even though I’m not sure how to do it.

Parenting is a formidable job and most days, I worry that I’m doing it right. However, this was one of my shining moments, when I felt like I had actually made progress. :)

How about you? Do you have any shining moments that you’d like to share?

Leave a comment. I’d love to read it! :)
