My Old Ass- If You Could Tell Your Past Self One Thing, What Would It Be?
Quick Take: One of the more charming surprises of the year, this film features a simple concept, if you got really high and suddenly could communicate with your future self, what would you learn? Well, in this case, the older version (which depresses me because I’m older than her old ass) is played by Aubrey Plaza, and she just wants her past self to stay away from one guy. She can’t tell her why. But, of course…
So, even though you know the trajectory, the journey is still fun. A well written script keeps the predictability at a minimum, and an engaging cast keeps you attached. Aubrey Plaza is the biggest draw, but also not the star. however, this movie is just another notch in her belt as she pushes herself dramatically. It isn’t your usual comedic sarcastic Plaza, but part of this newer brand, which balances her sardonic style of humor with a deep knowing of what is to come, and while the teens evolve in a natural way, it is her reaction of knowing what is to come that really captures your heart. The movie has an excellent audio description track. I especially loved the description of the younger brother’s room, who is obsessed with Saorise Ronan. This is on prime, and if you like comedies, with a dash of reality and romance, this surprisingly might be fore you. For more, check out the video.
