For my interview I had to speak for three minutes on the Suffragette Memorial in Christchurch Garden SW1…
I immediately sought help from one of my great political heroes – my 11-year-old-daughter Isobella. Her advice was priceless: wear purple, white and green the colours of the Suffrage Movement.
Whether the panel picked up on my palette I don't know. But for me it took the edge off the nerves – and I cannot remember the last time I was so nervous! Having my daughter "in" the interview with me really helped with the jelly knees.
I'm delighted to say that I was accepted onto the course and I start at the end of this month.
Thanks Isobella.
Isobella had a big week, too - off to secondary school. Her new school, Christ's College, Finchley has been a school for boys since the 1850s and this year girls have been admitted for the first time. So in this the 100th anniversary year of votes for women, my daughter finds herself in a pioneering role at a new school.
Good luck to everyone starting new schools, colleges and courses this week!
A Nice Cup Of Tea & A Bun (Or Two)
Visitors to the capital always ask me about afternoon tea in London– I must look like a well-fed sort of a fellow (note to self: get back to the gym!).
It's always great to recommend an unexpected place - besides, the teatime charms of Claridge's, The Dorchester, The Ritz, et al are truths we hold to be self evident. (Is it appropriate to quote the Declaration of Independence in relation to tea given the little fracas in Massachusetts back in 1773?)
So last Sunday it was off to The British Museum for finger sandwiches, cakes and lashings of Earl Grey…
I'm frankly surprised that their scones did not make it into the BBC series The History of the World in 100 Objects. I suppose they were number 101.

Striding Out
Friday was a day off for me, and on my days off I like to get out and about on foot. This week's Big Walk took me from home in East Finchley to Westminster Cathedral.
I'll be
sharing pics here a little later (the Monday Photoblog will feature shots from the top of the tower), but in the meantime here's an animated map of
the route from my new favorite toy the mapping app Relive…
