I don’t think I’ve ever been anywhere simultaneously so empty and beautiful as Namibia. It’s truly vast, with great stretches of desert, endless horizons, and huge skies.
My favorite spot is Spitzkoppe, an ancient granite outcrop that rises dramatically from the desert. It’s one of the best places I’ve ever camped, at the very foot of the mountain.
The sky was so full of stars that I could see almost as clearly at night as I could during the day.
Most nights I spent in Namibia were camping under the stars – and what incredible stars they are. There’s so little light pollution here that you can see billions of them, from horizon to horizon.
Namibia’s landscapes are unique: surreal, stark, and stunning. They make you feel incredibly small and humble but, at the same time, inspired and fully alive.
Climbing to the top of one of the towering dunes at Sossusvlei at sunset was another highlight for me. An electrical storm passed nearby, and the lightning turned the sky red as it hit other dunes in the distance.
The atmosphere was indescribable – like some kind of mystical magic.
If you’re looking for an African wildlife fix, Etosha National Park is one of the best places on the continent to go on safari. And the Skeleton Coast has a unique, eerie beauty, with its swirling fog and treacherous waves.
Namibia has a way of awakening your senses and redefining your idea of beauty. I love how easy it is here to disconnect from the craziness of daily life and reconnect with the natural world.
The photos below capture just a few of the moments that left me in awe of Namibia. I hope you like them.
