After seeing Allied last night it got me to thinking about how much I have always been into World War II. Although when I decided to put this list together I have now realised that I have not actually seen as many of the films based on this War as I actually expected. I therefore picked my seven favourites that I have seen (so far). Please let me know which ones are your favourites and which ones I should really watch!
I have tried to have quite varied choices!
Saving Private Ryan
A group of soldiers end up on a rescue mission to ensure a film has not lost all of their sons during the war. It is graphic, it shows what war really is like and it is the first collaboration with Hanks and Spielberg!
The Pianist
A film I have only seen once and still have such vivid memories about it. How the jews were treated and families torn apart, not really a film that you could recommend due to the subject manner and some scenes. At the same time a must see, hopefully that still makes sense.
Easily one of my all time favorite films, it gets better with each viewing. Showing the people who were caught in-between countries and stuck out in Casablanca during the second world war. The interesting thing about this film was that it was made whilst the war was still happening. Here’s looking at you kid!
Probably a controversial choice as I know this film seems to be held in such low regard, but I am a sucker for the love triangle and story that comes from two soldiers and best friends with a woman involved as well. Maybe war just did strange things to people?
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
Another I have only seen once and quite possibly the most depressing film you will ever watch. Honestly I still stand by that years after watching this film, even if you haven’t seen it I am sure you have heard about the final scene which is so upsetting its quite unreal!
The Lost Valentine
Now this is a more made for TV film but come on it has Betty White in it who is a widow from WWII still searching for closure on her husband dying at such a young age. A TV reporter following up on the story and it certainly turns into such a sweet tale of long lost love.
The Railway Man
I was blown away by this film and think it is one of Colin Firth’s greatest performances, yes even better than The King’s Speech. I felt this film did not get nearly enough credit for how amazing it set things in motion for how War can really hold onto someone no matter how many years have passed! It actually made me sad that Unbroken had more attention than this hidden gem of a film that was released before it!
