746 Books is once again hosting Twenty Books of Summer, which is a good way to think about and organize my summer reading. I hope I’ll be able to cover more than 20 books by September 3, but it’s always hard to stick to a list when you hear about new and exciting books. My list is a mix of Baileys Prize books, classics, around-the-world reads, science fiction, and just a few books I’ve been wanting to get to. Most of these are books I own already, which is a good thing.
Books from the Bailey’s Prize shortlist:
- Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo
- The Power by Naomi Alderman
- First Love by Gwendoline Riley
Books on current events/ state of the country:
- Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance
- Dark Money by Jane Mayer
Classics:
- Orlando by Virginia Woolf
- The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas
Science fiction and fantasy:
- Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett
- A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab
- Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer
- A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers
- Bloodchild by Octavia Butler
Reading around the world:
- Behold the Dreamers by Obolo Mbue
- Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
- The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen
- Brick Lane by Monica Ali
- The Infatuations by Javier Marias
And a few that I couldn’t categorize:
- Difficult Women by Roxane Gay
- Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson
- Miss Kopp’s Midnight Confessions by Amy Stewart
And three alternates just in case:
- Reading the Bones by Sheila Finch
- Conservation of Shadows by Yoon Ha Lee
- Binti: Home by Nnedi Okorafor
So, that’s my reading list for the summer! Have you read any of these? What’s on your summer reading list?
