Documentaries about people with any form of disability are so often overly inspirational, meant not just to tug at your heartstrings, but to yank them right out of your chest. But when I watch a documentary, I want to get to know the subjects as they are. I want the real story. And that’s just what “Who Am I To Stop It” does.

Co-director Cheryl Green (a lovely filmmaker, advocate, and blogger with whom I’ve had the pleasure of connecting), is in the midst of producing “Who Am I To Stop It” with independent filmmaker Cynthia Lopez. I had the opportunity to watch some selected scenes from the documentary, and I’m already eagerly awaiting the chance to see more!

According to the press release, “The film, currently in production, observes the lives of three Pacific Northwest artists with TBI. Through explorations of isolation, impairments, and the use of art to connect to community, this film seeks to raise not only awareness but also acceptance and appreciation of the brain injury community and the creative, dynamic contributions of its members.”

And the most important part: “This film empowers survivors of brain injury by detailing their intimate stories onscreen without sensationalizing or oversimplifying their complex lives.”

From what I’ve read and seen so far, “Who Am I To Stop It” is going to be everything a documentary should be – an inside look at interesting stories without any fuss or frills. I hope you’ll take a moment to check out the clip and read Cheryl’s interview and be sure to let me know what you think!
