Compared to when we first wrote about Museum of Love, there’s not a lot of action going on at DFA records at the moment. Except for a decent release from The Juan MacLean, it’s been a relatively slow year for the legendary NY label. Things did however pick up a bit last month when former LCD Soundsystem drummer Pat Mahoney and The Juan MacLean’s touring partner Dennis McNany released their self-titled debut album under their Museum Of Love moniker. The album is well worth a listen – a very typical DFA release, with Mahoney’s voice echoing everybody from Brian Ferry, David Byrne, Mark Hollis and Brian Eno clothed in 80’s new wave and crystalline, lower-registry emphasized production. The best tracks seem to have gravitated towards the center of the record, with “The Who’s Who of Who Cares” being the clearest stand-out. The production initially revolves around a characteristic italo disco bass-line that wouldn’t sound misplaced on Todd Terje track. Eventually, a cacophony of synthesized horns, crashing cymbals and haunted synth lines vibrates “The Who’s Who of Who Cares” into an orgy of sounds and disorder.
