Speaker Dr. Shoka Ranwala revealed yesterday that a significant number of luxury vehicles remain unused, as most Members of Parliament (MPs) and Ministers are reluctant to use them due to their high fuel consumption.

Speaking at an event at the Nāgānanda International Institute for Buddhist Studies, the Speaker emphasized that such vehicles, given their inefficient fuel usage, are not practical for Sri Lanka’s needs.

Addressing a query, Dr. Ranwala clarified that no MP has so far made a request through Parliament for luxury vehicles.

He further stated that all MPs and Ministers, from both the government and the opposition, must align with the public’s expectations and adopt a more selfless approach.

When questioned about the possibility of selling these vehicles, the Speaker explained that auctioning them would require a decision at the national level.

Dr. Ranwala also noted that Ministers have not sought official residences, stating that government-owned properties will be utilized for public purposes rather than personal use by Ministers.

“The government is responsible for maintaining these state-owned residences,” he added.
