Verdict: One Twisted Hotel Manager
Story: Besetment starts as we follow Amanda Millard (Wathen) a young lady struggling to find a job to help her escape from her mother (Klein), when she finds a job it does mean traveling over 100 miles to work in a small hotel for Mildred Colvin (Mason).
Accepting the job, Amanda gets to move into the hotel in this small town with Mildred and her son Billy (Meyer), she also meets the local chef Brad (Gutfreund) but this new life takes a turn when Mildred and Billy’s true issues come out and Amanda must fight to survive.
Thoughts on Besetment
Characters/Performance – Amanda is a young woman who is suffering with the lack of experience to get a job near home, meaning she must travel which gives her a perfect sounding job, but this leads to her needing to fight for life. Mildred is the owner of the hotel that has been planning a life for her son, she demands certain things and has complete control over Billy. Billy is the son forced into his mother’s twisted fantasy.
Performance wise, Abby does a good job in this role, she might not be in the most mobile position for most of the film but we understand her difficult situation. Marlyn does a good job as the controlling mother with plenty of demanding scenes.
Story – Looking into the story we get an easy to follow story that does have a couple of moments that do shock by pushing boundaries we wouldn’t normal be seen pushed. The main story is demanding mother creates a fantasy world for her son with our victim needing to fight back to survive, easy to follow.
Horror – The horror comes from the kidnapping angle of the film, we get to see how one woman deals with the punishment to be part of the fantasy.
Settings – The settings are in a small town which is always good because it creates the idea of not truly knowing your neighbor.
Special Effects – The effects are low budget but just as effective as they need to be for the moments that require special effects.
Final Thoughts – This is a good horror film, it does all you need without being the most ground breaking and not falling into the ‘stupid character makes stupid decisions making me hate the film’ selection.
Overall: Horror fans check it out.
