I said it before in my original review for this movie back in July, that I like to think of my comedic tastes to lean more towards smartly written, sometimes dry humor that I enjoy picking up on. Sometimes though, deep in my soul, dick and fart jokes, crude humor, and vulgarity still gets me to giggle like a kid in assembly who heard someone cut a wicked fart during the principals speech. I don’t know why, but fuck that shit is funny. Now there is a fine line between crude, dick and fart humor and that of toilet humor. Look at The Love Guru for an example of bottom of the barrel toilet humor. For a good example crude, vulgarity that is fucking hilarious, Ted is the answer.
I was utterly surprised with Ted when I saw it in theaters. It was a full house on Saturday night and frankly I thought that this movie was going to be gimmicky and more of the same from Seth MacFarlane. The expectation was Family Guy style humor and I thought it would get real old, real quick, but to my surprise it was easily one of the funniest movies (to me anyways) that I saw this summer. The vulgar teddy bear and Mark Wahlberg are wonderful together as Mark just does a fantastic job at interacting with a teddy bear that talks as if it is the most natural thing in the world. This is one of the few Wahlberg movies that I really, really enjoy and it helps because the writing and jokes are rapid fire and well done. Nothing is off limits here and with MacFarlane lending his voice talents, Ted comes to life in the best way possible.
If you haven’t seen the movie, I highly recommend it for a solid laugh. There were a few issues with the movie in terms of crowding of jokes and over saturation of certain scenes with way too much going on to where we miss a lot of the jokes and setups. Some of the writing seems to trail off into rabbit holes that don’t go a lot of places, but those are small nit picks of an otherwise solid comedy.

From Flash Gordon references, Teddy bear fights, fat kid jokes and the liberal use of profanity that would dwarf inner city high schools, Ted is the sort of R-Rated comedy that doesn’t pull punches on the jokes, but still manages to give us a touching story. The appeal of the movie is going to come from word of mouth about this movie. If you aren’t a fan of MacFarlane and his comedy, you might not enjoy it. For those loyal fans, you are going to love his self-referential humor and call backs to Family Guy style setups. The cameos and secondary characters are brilliant and completely work in this movie, never fully taking you out of the element, especially considering it’s a movie about a loud mouth teddy bear.
