Stunt Rock!

Stunt Rock 1a

Australian stuntman Grant Page accepts a job on an American television series and travels to Los Angeles, where he reunites with old friend and fellow daredevil Curtis Hyde. The hirsute Hyde performs magic tricks and feats of daring for a heavy metal act called Sorcery, each gig playing the part of a demon locked in “cosmic combat” with Merlin the Magician (Paul Haynes) while the band blasts out a theatrical but muscular hard rock. Page’s first stunt for the cameras goes awry and he is hospitalized, but defies his doctors by escaping out a fifth story window to get back to the set. Such reckless behavior attracts the attention of a newspaper reporter (Margaret Gerard) who is writing an article on people obsessed with their careers, as well as a TV star (Monique van de Ven) who finds herself drawn to the stuntman’s professional fearlessness. Together they attend Sorcery concerts, enjoy Hollywood parties with the band and explore the nature of extreme living. ~ Fred Beldin, Rovi

Holy fuck there was a plot to this movie?!?!?!?!  All I remember watching this is that there some pretty gnarly stunts and some sort of wizard casting lighting bolts or something on stage.  I get that the band is named Sorcery so the wizard thing fits the motif, but hell there was seriously a plot to this?  Man I must have not been paying any sort of attention to those scenes where somebody wasn’t driving a car through some sort of explosion.  Learn something new every day.

Stunt Rock 1b

Anyways, Stunt Rock, is just a movie with some pretty impressive stunts, while the band Sorcery decides to just wail on the guitar for like 90 minutes.  For some reason, I was compelled to watch this, not looking away as if a spell has  been cast on me.  The stunts are pretty insane for the most part, at least for what the late 70s were able to produce in terms of explosions, death defying jumps and a lot of car crashes for some reason.  The quality of the picture is unfortunately grainy as hell, which is a given since this is a low budget affair in the exploitation era.  I still am so mesmerized by the fireball throwing wizard or sorcerer on stage.  That by far and away is the best part of this movie.

I guess if you like a little metal music to go along with your stunt watching, this is pretty decent.  It’s not my cup of tea personally, but do you see the wizard on stage.  More bands these days need to have some theatrics or possibly make stunt movies so they can get their name out there.  I will give it some credit, it was entertaining to watch a montage of well done stunts with a decent metal track keep the movie paced nicely.  The story is pretty much a window dressing since I didn’t realize there was one and I am sure you won’t notice it as well.  This is certainly a relic of the times, an exploitation film made because they can make.  I will have to thank the movie Trailer Wars for digging up this gem and allowing me to track it down.
