In the last moments of World War II, a secret Nazi space program evaded destruction by fleeing to the Dark Side of the Moon. During 70 years of utter secrecy, the Nazis construct a gigantic space fortress with a massive armada of flying saucers. When American astronaut James Washington (Christopher Kirby) puts down his Lunar Lander a bit too close to the secret Nazi base, the Moon Führer (Udo Kier) decides the glorious moment of retaking the Earth has arrived sooner than expected. Two Nazi officers, ruthless Klaus Adler (Götz Otto) and idealistic Renate Richter (Julia Dietze), travel to Earth to prepare the invasion. It’s movies like that keep giving Udo Kier consistent work and I am thankful for that as much as he is. Yes, Iron Sky is an enormously ambitious movie that sadly falters at being something more than a Sy-Fy original movie. For me though, I love it just the way it is. Absurd, unintentionally funny and damn entertaining, it’s these sort of drunk movie discussions that somehow make it to the screen that are truly magical. I mean this is a movie about Nazis that somehow colonized the moon and waiting to strike the Earth with their ships and technology and ideology.
Sigh, it’s a pretty movie, a lot of visual flair and spectacle that makes this worth watching. It’s just that the story is fractured and not all that complete, the acting is what you expect in a movie like this, but the spectacle of space battles are wonderful and there is a some good, biting humor amongst the remnants of a good movie idea. I think if this had a much higher budget and a more work on developing the story and setting, this could have been a great movie.
Overall, this isn’t a terrible movie, just one that missed the mark enough to create something joyously bad enough for us to sit back and have an unintentional laugh. There are some great parts in the movie though, like the battles and general cavorting of the nazis on Earth. It’s deliciously bad to say the least and I can come to appreciate a story about Space Nazis that deliver an enjoyable time, just wish it was a great time. Oh well, you live and learn with these high concept ideas.
