Mourning Sign – Last Chamber/Alienor

Mourning Sign – Last Chamber/Alienor
Swedish death metal ruled the world back in the early 90s. Entombed, Nirvana 2002, Dismember and a bunch of other groups set the standard for the genre. And it didn’t stop there. In every garage, cellar or rehearsal room there was at least one local death metal band hammering out crushing grunts and blast beats.
In the small town where I lived back then we had Mourning Sign. They released two demos on tape in 1992 and 1993 that kind of ruled the local scene. Later on Mourning Sign actually released two full length albums before going into hiatus for 20 years. But now is the time for the revival and the now forty something men of mayhem are releasing the demos in remastered condition on cd to finance the recording of new material. And holy shit it sounds good. If you really want the feel and smell of death as it should be this is it. The riffs are clearly influenced by Carcass but hey what’s wrong with Carcass? Absolutely nothing at all. The first four tracks are the “Last Chamber” demo and its got a rawer feel to it than the other part of the cd which is “Alienor” which have a more technical feel to it with clean vocals in part and a more melodic element. It’s kind of nice to hear the development of musicianship that happens during the year that separates the two recordings. And it’s great to hear that even though 24 years have passed this still holds up as high quality deadly steel.
Only death is real as they say.
