LG's cellular business has been a shadow of its former self for a while now, although the company is still able to deliver great flagships like the LG V60 and unique form factors like the LG Wing.
Phones like these may not be enough to improve the smartphone unit business, and we've now heard numerous rumors that a sale or some other drastic move is being considered. That asked us if Android Authority Readers think LG should sell this line of business.
Should LG Sell Its Smartphone Business?
Results
We asked this question on January 20, 2021 and at the time of writing it had 1,512 votes. The results show that just over 60% of respondents are against the idea of LG selling its smartphone business. Some users feel that LG should focus on certain segments, improve its marketing and / or expand availability instead.
It's easy to see why readers would vote against a sale, given the company has been making solid flagships for some time and its marketing budget has been dwarfed by Samsung for years. We've also seen devices like the LG Wing and its upcoming rollable, which shows that the company is still thinking outside the box.
Almost 40% now believe that the Korean company should actually sell its smartphone business. This is a pretty understandable decision too, given that the cellular business has posted losses for over 20 consecutive quarters. At this point, we wouldn't blame LG if it did decide to get out of the game.
Remarks
- Tony Talks: There is no need to completely eradicate it, but you need to downsize significantly. Just share a killer phone that really attracts customers and is great value for money. And do a thorough overhaul of the software, like the old Oneplus software. That definitely increases the chances within 4 years.
- Wongwatt: Honestly, I voted yes because if LG is questioning its worth and already notoriously bad about release guidelines and updates, how will it ever get better?
LG phones are solid devices that are hindered by the company that makes them. I don't necessarily think things get better under a new owner, but it's hard to see things get worse. - Farhan Ahmad Tajuddin: What LG should really be doing is stepping up marketing and giving more regions more availability. While Sony smartphones aren't as cheap as their Chinese counterparts, they at least have great market availability. Even I have to import a DualScreen V50 from the US to Malaysia. Same story with a friend of mine who recently got his Wing 5G. That's not a good sign.
- pda96: LG should only focus on medium range phones and forget about flagships. This is a hot segment right now. LG dropped the ball a long time ago with slow OS updates and boot loop issues. They didn't listen to customers. As a result, they did not offer what the market was asking for. So the sales fueled. I would like to buy LG instead of Samsung. And I'll miss LG if it goes away.
- roaduardo: Reason enough not to buy any new LG cell phones for the time being. No idea that I would like to invest in buying a phone from a company that doesn't take their future support seriously.
- Jimbo: I prefer the LG phones. I still use my V30 +, the most durable phone I've ever had. Motorolas will die in 2 years. Samsung's too. My wife is out of necessity on her 3rd Samsung while my LG keeps rolling.
- Adrian: Sad news. Here I thought I would update my V30 with the V70 this year. The 3 most important things I look for in a smartphone will be gone. Affordability, SD expansion, headphone jack and fingerprint scanner
- Diego: I really wish they had done better. I myself was looking for a $ 200 phone with LG said to play a key role and found that the user interface is outdated, the camera setting is poor (especially when compared to Xiaomi and Motorola), and terrible screens. Why is it so hard to make a good phone? Be competitive or just call it finished, but it's been so awful since Android became Samsung + Chinese manufacturers.
