Just typing the words, "brown painting," made me cringe. Does anyone ever go looking for a brown painting? Yet, there are so many variations of brown--the umbers and siennas--and when you start blending them with other colors, they become more interesting.
I love to add orange and red to my browns, and to deepen them with black. So after staring at the painting I started yesterday, I began to add more of the darker browns--raw and burnt umber. I painted over a lot of the pyrole orange, and added some cadmium orange and cadmium yellow light.
My continued efforts had the effect of toning down the brightness of the original canvas and giving it more depth. For detail and texture, I drew lines in parchment and black.
I'll decide tomorrow if it is "finished" or not.
