Over the years I blogged about having many Twitter Followers and what it could do for you on Twitter. As you can see the blog post was shared on the social network many years ago when this blog post was first published.

Do More Twitter Followers = More Reach and Engagement?
Having a large Twitter following can give you more social proof on the Twitter network. People may decide to follow you if they see how many other peeps are following you on Twitter. If they only see a few hundred followers they may decide NOT to follow you. It’s human nature, right?
Learn how to get more Twitter followers and increase your reach.Of course, having a great Twitter bio, photo and pinned tweet can help you to get more followers too. Profiles that are clever on Twitter can get me to follow them. That is of course unless their tweets disappoint me later on or if they never engage with me.
Why Only 100 Twitter Followers?
I’ve since then read several blog posts on why just 100 followers are all you need and it made me wonder, which follower count is better for you? Having only 100 Twitter followers would be easier to manage, right?
Tim Soulo of Blogger Jet thinks the 100 followers will do something for you every time you ask them on Twitter. He does acknowledge that you will gain thousands of other followers along the way but having 100 true followers is golden. It’s those 100 that you will have a personal connection with.
Why A Large Following Is Useful
Are you better off having fewer engaged Twitter followers or a large Twitter following that can generate more re-tweets, favorites, and shares all around driving more traffic to your website and sharing links that you tweet? Does having more Twitter followers extend your reach online?
Ross Quintana of Social Magnets once shared his thoughts on this as he reached 100,000 followers on Twitter. I love how he explains the momentum factor. Activity breeds more activity.
The more activity you have on Twitter the more activity you will have on Twitter = momentum.
Click To Tweet
Ross surely makes a lot of sense with that quote. People like to see social proof and activity is part of that. Would you tweet someone who has never tweeted before or only has 1 follower? It probably would be less likely that you would tweet them, retweet them or give them a favorite.
Google Effect
You may have known that tweets are showing up on Google (on mobile and desktop). Would your tweets on Google search also help your SEO efforts? That is something else to consider especially for your tweets. Did you also know that tweets you have deleted may still show up on Google search?
Your tweets may show up on Google, if you click on them they will open up the tweet.Twitter offers these steps to have it taken off the web if you prefer:
Google will eventually index updated Twitter information, but if you’d like to request Google to do it sooner, follow these steps from Twitter:
- Copy the Twitter URL you’d like removed from Google’s index (for example twitter.com/#!/[username here]/status/12345678)
- Visit Google’s page to remove outdated content.
- Paste in the Twitter URL that you’d like removed.
- Submit your request.
3 Advantages of a More Twitter Followers
1. Momentum
It is easier to get more Twitter followers to follow you when you have more Twitter followers. Ironic, isn’t it? I found after I reached 3,000 followers it took less time to get the next 3,000 followers. I finally reached 29,400 recently and the followers just keep adding up slowly but surely. (Thanks to those that are following me!)
It was such a struggle to get more Twitter followers when you only had 100 followers. (if you can remember back to that time…I know I can) . You barely would get 1 new follower per day unless you joined a Twitter chat or engaged with a bunch of peeps on Twitter. It took a lot of hard work and time.
2. Reach
You can reach more people via your followers. The more Twitter followers you have the more their followers can find you. Every time your Twitter followers share something their followers may share or follow you too!
It can have a snowball effect. It just gets bigger as it rolls down the hill.
3. Influence
The more Twitter followers you have, the more perceived influence you have. It may be perceived influence but once they get to know you, learn from you, and trust you that influence becomes authentic.
Twitter Ratio Follower Limits
These ratio limits can stop a peep from generating more followers sadly. The limits are from Twitter stated below:
- Every Twitter account can follow up to 5,000 accounts. Once you reach that number, you may need to wait until your account has more followers before you can follow additional accounts.
- This number is different for each account and is automatically calculated based on your unique ratio of followers to following.
It’s a magical sauce that can be frustrating for many users on this social network.
My friend Martin on Twitter has been plagued by this for years. I don’t understand why Twitter still uses this measurement for followers.
@tonycecala Thanks for the follow! I will follow you back as soon as I have fixed the follow limit. When will Elon stop counting bots on Twitter? @Lisapatb Any new Twitter tool for “spring cleaning” your account in an easy way? #tweet100 #twitterfollowers pic.twitter.com/QC9gB1qbpQ

Why does Twitter still keep limits on follower counts? It’s an old Twitter rule. It should be updated or the unique ratio explained to its’s faithful users.
How to Track Who Follows or Unfollows You on Twitter
To keep track I love using a FREE tool called Tweepsmap. Of course, you can upgrade and get all kinds of bells and whistles. However, I do receive an email each week from those who unfollowed or followed me. (Funny thing, this email from Tweepsmap came while updating this blog post!)
A great FREE tool to track your followers and unfollowers on Twitter. You can also find inactive folks who you follow. You may want to stop following those inactive users. Why follow if they haven’t tweeted in years? However, do note many of these users may still be following you. So those numbers may be inflated, something Elon Musk has been talking about.
Examples of Large Twitter Followings
Have you ever looked at celebrity singer Katy Perry’s Twitter account? She has over 108 million Twitter followers today. Check out how many retweets and favorites she gets on just one tweet. You might be amazed.

Elon Musk follows right behind with over 105 million followers today. He tweets about a lot of different things and this tweet is about those bots I mentioned above. Time will tell in October when he and Twitter meet in court.

How about a non-celebrity but someone like social media great Kim Garst who has over 575,000 followers?

And of course, there is Madely Sklar of the Twitter Smarter chat with over 100,000 followers. She also hosts a Twitter space as well.
I’m excited to host this week’s #TwitterSmarter chat with special guest @BrookeSellas. We’ll be talking about connecting with conversations. Hope to see you there! pic.twitter.com/L8vRiSeeaB

The Advantage of Twitter Friends
There is nothing like having a true follower on Twitter who will email you or direct message you if do not show up for a day on the Twitter network. These types of peeps are like true friends.
They will retweet your latest blog posts and various other tweets. These are your fans. These Twitter follower fans will follow you and check on you when you are not there on Twitter. I have a few of those – and thank you to them! These types of Twitter followers are to be your treasured followers and friends.
Recently had a couple of VERY POPULAR tweeters seemingly asking me to follow them – AGAIN.
Note:
Lisa Sicard has 29.4k followers: @Lisapatb
Madalyn Sklar has 101.3k followers: @MadalynSklarDon’t follow new versions (with additional letters tagged on).

Thanks for the update. I have reported the account.

Except this is a fake account too. @Lisapatb is a mutual and this is not her account.
Time to report this.
