New reports have suggested that Apple and Google can delete nearly 15 applications on the App Store and Play Store. Pixalate analytic companies have reported that nearly 1.5 million applications between the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store seem to have been abandoned. That means they have not been updated in more than two years. Most of the outreashed applications are under the category of education, references, and games, which are often liked by children.
This report also added that there are more than 314,000 super displaced applications, which means that they have not been updated in more than five years. Of the total applications, the Apple App Store has 58% of this application which amounts to 184K. While the remaining 42% of applications are on the Google Play Store and they amounted to 130 thousand.
Earlier this year, Apple and Google issued a warning to developers about applications that have not been updated for a long time. Many developers have updated their applications after warning. According to the report, a total of 1.3 million applications have been updated in all Google and Apple App Stores in the last six months, at the end of Q1 2022.
Apple has reportedly sent notifications to several developers and warned them that outdated applications will be deleted from the App Store if they have not been updated in a significant time. However, the technology giant also added that this would not affect users who had downloaded the application because they would remain on their devices. On the application repair page, Apple has stated that “We apply the continuous process in evaluating applications, deleting applications that no longer function as intended, do not follow the current review guidelines, or out of date.”
Like Apple, Google has also issued a statement and said that they expanded the API level of the Play Store target level. That is, applications and new updates must target the level of Android API in one year from the release of the latest Android OS version, or they cannot be published.
Why will the applications left will be deleted?
This application, which has not received an update for a long time, is always a security risk. If the application is not updated, they don’t get a security patch and will also have a bug that can be problematic. Also, if the developer looks for income from advertisers, the application needs to be updated regularly.
When will the application be expected to be deleted?
According to the report, this application must be updated immediately if not they will be deleted from the App Store within 30 days they have received a warning. So it is not clear how and when Apple will delete the application.
Google has announced that states that existing applications that do not target the API level in two years from the latest Android release version will not be available for discoveries or installations for new users with devices that run the Android OS version higher than the API level of the target application starting from November 1, 2022.
