Moorish Architecture On Rua De José Falcão

By Gail Aguiar @ImageLegacy

Rua de José Falcão, 199 (Porto, Portugal)

One of my favourite buildings in Porto is 199 Rua de José Falcão, which currently houses ROUTE 199 (a bar) and Comme Ça, a restaurant. It was formerly an antique warehouse/showroom for ceramics (Antigo Armazém-Mostruário da Fábrica de Cerãmica das Devezas), and built in a Moorish style at the end of the 19th century.

There isn’t much information about this building online, and what I could find is only in Portuguese. The second article is extensive, but the focus is mostly on the ceramics factory buildings across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, where the Ceramics Factory of Devezas was originally located.

In 1899 construction began on this building on Rua de José Falcão, and that’s where the trail ends for now. Once I find out more about the history of the building, I’ll update this post.
