Monzo Launches New Monzo Plus with Software Features It Hopes Users Will Want to Pay for – ProWellTech

Can a bank fee for software? This is the existential question that Monzo seems to ask himself with his second - or perhaps third - attempt to launch Monzo In addition, a premium version of his famous checking account.

In an unusual (and very public) misstep, Monzo originally launched a version of Monzo Plus in 2019, only after five months did he succeed and returned to the drawing board, apparently dispensing much of the team into the process. The second version of Monzo Plus was therefore developed and reportedly "ready for the oven", to borrow a phrase from British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, only to be put into freezing after the coronavirus pandemic broke out. taken hold. The new Monzo Plus was heavy in terms of travel benefits, but with travel restrictions and blocking policies across much of the world, the impossibility of market-product has been abruptly left to be desired.

Enter the new new Monzo Plus, a pandemic-proof deviation from the more traditional packaged bank account. The cost is £ 5 per month, rather than grouping together a number of benefits that could otherwise be sold individually, such as travel insurance or gadgets or additional cash-back and merchant discounts, as many other banks and fintechs do, this third Monzo Plus attempt is more like a paid software update. Think of a SaaS model compared to cable TV where you usually pay a lot of channels, including the ones you will probably never watch, even if Monzo won't rule out a bundled bank account product in the future, perhaps following the lines of what he had originally planned.

According to the words of the challenger's bank, the new Monzo Plus offer that will be launched gradually today is designed to offer customers "full financial visibility and control over their money" and includes a series of additional features and sometimes a power-user who thinks a proportion of customers will be happy to pay.

These include aggregation of third party bank accounts, virtual debit cards, custom transaction categories, export of spreadsheets and credit score updates. Monzo Plus customers can also earn interest on their balances of up to £ 2,000 and there are a number of more traditional perks, such as discounts at partner merchants and £ 400 of free withdrawals abroad.

"I think it's very obvious that we've tried a few times and it didn't work," Monzo's recently hired Chief Product Officer Mike Hudack told ProWellTech. "I think there are many reasons for this, but I think the biggest lesson for us as an organization to take away is that we have to fulfill Monzo's promise to create something truly refined. [and] well thought out, which creates a lot of value for customers. And that's what people expect from us. "

After being hired full-time in February and consulting the upstart bank 11 months earlier, Hudack says the product team decided to spend a lot of time trying to figure out why people love Monzo in the first place. "Why do people use us? Why they participate And the answer is very clear [the] research, we give people more visibility and control over their money. It's really that simple, "he says.

In an effort to bring what I have as a SaaS model into consumer banking, Hudack says it is clear that there is software in the world that is worth paying for and sees no reason why it should be any different for a bank, especially one like Monzo. which acts as a software company as much as a financial institution.

"This software has the potential to significantly change people's relationships with their finances and help them manage their money better and help them, you know, save towards a home and save towards the down payment and understand that credit is in good shape to get that mortgage, "he says. "And I think it's a value package, which is super convincing and the kind of thing we can provide quite uniquely on the market. I think it's an important thing for us to do. And again, it doubles on something that people already love us for. "

The new new Monzo Plus, in the words of the chief product officer (in the register)

Account aggregation

"The first thing we are doing is giving people tons of visibility into the other bank accounts within Monzo. If you think about what people say about us, giving visibility and control over people to their money, "we think that to do that, we have to bring all your accounts, you have to be able to see everything in the application.

"I've installed this app for a long time. I think it changes your relationship with Monzo; it becomes more a financial center. And it goes beyond fulfilling our mission. And it's incredibly easy to set up, just go, touch a few times, quickly switch between one app to another and then you have it. And this, again, is based on part of our redesign in terms of being able to switch between accounts easily. "

Disposable virtual debit cards

"The next thing we are doing to give people more control is to give them disposable card numbers. So the ability to access Uber, Netflix and use a different physical card. If you are transacting somewhere else where you think you may have to drop your card number later on, I think it's a very powerful thing, but even if you lose your physical card, all your subscriptions, you keep working forever. "

Export of custom categories and Google Sheets

"Customers asked for custom categories, [and] for more powerful budget features. Custom categories offer the ability to split individual transactions between multiple categories. And then there are people who really want to go to the city on a budget. This is something I used to do, so I don't have enough time anymore. But I used to export everything, put it in Google Sheets, create diagrams and graphs and sit with my wife and drive her crazy with our monthly burning rate and what we're doing and we're spending, you know, absolutely absurd amount of money on Ubers every month. And there is a group of people who love it, who really want it and who find value in the budget features that we offer in the app, but they really want to tweak it. And for them, we are now automatically exporting to Google Sheets. In real time, you can enter and you can do whatever you want there.

"And I think this, combined with linked accounts, combined with custom categories, the ability to split transactions across multiple categories and the ability to keep your subscriptions active or to deactivate a subscription at any time, together offer people a huge amount more control over their money. "

Outside with hot coral, inside with holographic blue

"The other part of this, which I think is incredibly important, is that we have this truly iconic hot coral card. And, you know, I think it's a big part of our growth story. And to some extent, Monzo is fashionable, you go to a pub, take out your credit card, touch it and people know you're part of the tribe. And so it was an incredibly big challenge for us to understand how to build on it [and] give people a premium card that fulfills that promise of hot coral. And we spent so much time on this, we went to so many card makers, created a huge number of different prototypes and samples, the time we spent passing different versions back and forth. And the thing that came with it, I think is absolutely beautiful. Beautiful and more beautiful than the coral card. I have had it in my portfolio for weeks now, and it's just, it's beautiful. As if it shines in the sunlight, in a way you move it and it's holographic. And you see it in a sense of three dimensions, the light that shines only from it. And it took the top position in my portfolio. You take it out and go to a restaurant and people just comment on it. And I think it will be a huge thing for people too. "

Interest rate, credit score tracking, supercharged tracking, free cash withdrawals and offers

"I think if you put all this together, you have a really beautiful image, but we are also offering people interest in their balance, incredibly competitive interest at this point. We are adding to the full picture of your finances by adding regular credit monitoring. And then we're helping people save on a regular basis more effectively by performing an advanced roundup, supercharging the roundup and then extra free money abroad on deposits and cash offers.

"I think one of the things you will find about it is that it feels good in the hand. Like everything about it, the interactions, the way you feel it. It's a refined and complete proposal for people in a way that I think we could have done better in the past if you let me say it. "
