Story: Monstrous starts when Laura (Ricci) relocates with her son Cody (Barnard). She is hiding from her ex-husband while trying to start a fresh life. At night, Cody finds himself getting visited by an unusual creature. One that seems to be getting closer each night.

Laura leads the investigation into what is happening, asking the locals for advice. The pair must figure out what is going on before falling too far off the radar of everyday life. Or deal with the monster that comes at night.

Verdict on Monstrous

Monstrous is a fantasy horror following a divorced mother that is trying to start a new life with her son. After finding a new place, a visitor from the local lake starts to haunt them. Leading to a battle to survive or understand what is going on.

This is a movie that plays heavily into loss and uncertainty. Using a strained relationship between mother and daughter to understand what is going on. It goes in a strange direction, one that will leave you shocked by the outcome. Christina Ricci is as always delightful to watch in the leading role. While the rest of the movie doesn’t put enough on to the bigger mystery going on.

Final Thoughts – Monstrous is a by-the-books fantasy horror, relying on the shock, rather than building up enough.
