Monosodium glutamate (MSG), or sodium glutamate, is a flavor enhancer commonly added to soups, canned vegetables, Chinese food, and processed meats. The United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has classified MSG as a food ingredient that is generally recognized as safe, but its use remains controversial. MSG is found in all types of food, ranging from konbu to packaged chips. MSG gives a special aroma to processed foods that can be termed as savory, and also helps to reduce the sodium content in food. Whether it is in the form of spice rubs, marinades, or soups, this ingredient makes food taste better.
