Today’s post is sponsored by Dove. My opinions and love for the Love Your Hair campaign are all my own.
My daughter was born with a full head of thick, brown, curly hair. It wasn’t a surprise because naturally, that’s the type of hair I have. I’ve always been blessed when it comes to my hair. However, I never really appreciated it because I wanted to be like all the girls I saw in the magazines; super long, blonde, and straight hair. But of course I would learn with age, that’s not true in the least bit. That everyone has a love-hate relationship with their hair and once you accept that, you’ll realize that your hair is beautiful in its own way.
\I’m obsessed with my daughter’s hair. It’s the perfect color of light brown with golden blonde strands glistening through it. It curls ever so perfectly at the ends and makes the cutest little top knot (when she’ll actually let me do it). She’s young so I know she doesn’t know any different know. She couldn’t care less about her hair. But as she grows, she’s going to notice the different types of hair. Maybe she’ll complain it’s too curly when she needs to straighten it. Maybe she’ll complain it’s pin straight and won’t curl. Who knows. But I want to teach her to embrace whatever type of hair she grows up to have.
If she wants to make chemical changes when she’s old enough, that’s her choice. And I’d be a hypocrite to say she couldn’t. But I always want her to feel that regardless, without any changes at all, she’s beautiful the way she is.
Earlier this year, Dove Hair discovered that 8 out of 10 women feel pressure to wear their hair a certain way. That’s an outrageous amount, isn’t it? And since 82% of girls learn to care for themselves from their mother, it’s our job to teach them there’s no reason to feel anxious or pressured to wear their hair a certain way. I love that Dove encourages women to embrace and celebrate their hair! And that per the statistics, our daughters deserve to see us loving ourselves (and our hair) so they grow up to do the same.
