Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa alleged that Public Security and Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga misled Parliament on the Rambukkana incident on Tuesday (19).
He said that the victim of the incident K.D.Chaminda Lakshan of Karandagastenna, Naranbedda, Hiriwadunna, Rambukkana was a father of two who had come to buy petrol and other essentials.
Premadasa said further that Lakshan too was enjoying his right to expression democratically. However he was murdered and the responsibility must be taken by the government. He added that the government too had killed media personnel.
At this stage Minister Ranatunga said that Premadasa was referring to the late President R. Premadasa’s government. He added that the purpose of the debate was to discuss the Rambukkana incident and related matters and issues. He also said that deviating from that objective Sajith Premadasa was speaking of his late father’s regime.
Opposition Leader queried if the Police used the minimum force in shooting and killing the protestor. He queried as to who was the SSP who instructed to shoot the protestors.
“Did the government forget that the country has had to go before IMF and the Government is responsible for protecting human rights,” Premadasa said. “We take the responsibility of looking after the family of deceased Chaminda Lakshan.”
