Minister Orders CEB to Get Tough with Errant Employees

Proposal to reduce electricity rates to PUCSL next week
Leave of all CEB employees cancelled until further notice

Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera has instructed the management of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to suspend any employee who obstructs the services of the CEB or acts in violation of the guidelines issued by its management.

The Minister also mentioned that the proposal related to the restructuring of the CEB is to be submitted to the Parliament with amendments and the proposal to reduce the electricity bill will also be submitted to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) next week.

CEB employees announced a three-day protest period from yesterday (3) against the proposed Bill to restructure the CEB.

Leave of all employees of CEB has been cancelled until further notice and in case of emergency, employees can be approved leave only with the approval of an Executive Officer attached to the relevant branch or division.

Also, the Minister states that the right to publish official announcements of the CEB is only for the officers authorized by the Chairman or the General Manager.

It has been advised that employees should not use official identities and information on social media networks, websites, for any reason.

A circular has also been issued revising the present procedure mentioning banning using office networks and internet facilities for publishing on social media.

Accordingly, it is also stated in the circular that mobile phones provided by the CEB should not be used for non official activities and if it is confirmed that using them to run unofficial social networking groups or to criticize the CEB management, the Minister or Ministry activities or the Government from such a group and disciplinary action will be taken against it.
