Minecraft’s next big update in 2025 will bring a big surprise: a ghast that won’t try to shoot you! Meet the Happy Ghast, a nice version of the scary Nether mob.
Forget what you know about ghasts. These gentle giants are friendly and give you a new way to fly in the Overworld. This is great for players who haven’t made it to The End yet.
While some players might fly with Elytra, the Happy Ghast is easier to get and lets you start flying much sooner in the game. Plus, up to four players can ride it together, making it perfect for exploring with friends.
But getting your own flying friend isn’t easy. You have to go through a few steps to change these creatures from dried-up blocks into big, rideable buddies.

Getting Your Happy Ghast
Minecraft | Mejoress
Your journey starts in the Nether, where you need to find the “Dried Ghast Block.” This block looks like a small, sad ghast – like a dried-up version of the normal one.
Mine this block and take it back to the Overworld. That’s where the fun begins.
Next, you need to give it a bath. Put the Dried Ghast Block all the way under water. You can use a lake or river, or build your own pool – it’s up to you.
Now, you wait. Mojang says it takes about 20 real-world minutes for the block to change into a “Happy Ghastling.” But when we tried it out, the time changed a bit.
Putting down many blocks at once makes it a surprise, because you won’t know which one will change first.
Watch the block closely. You’ll see a big change: the sad face slowly turns into a happy smile. This means the Happy Ghastling is coming soon.
The Ghastling is a tiny version of the grown-up Happy Ghast. It’s too small to ride, but it’s very cute.
You can wait for it to grow bigger, or, if you’re in a hurry, feed it snowballs to make it grow faster.
Once your Ghastling is grown up, you need one more thing before you can fly: a harness. You make this with glass, leather, and wool blocks.
The best part is you can make it look different – use different colors of wool to make cool designs. It’s the best-looking riding gear in Minecraft so far!
(A gallery section would go here, showing the ghast and harness variations.)
With the harness on, you can ride the Happy Ghast like a horse. Up to three other players can ride with you, and the player in front controls where it goes.
It’s not as fast as flying with Elytra, but it’s a nice, relaxing way to travel, and it doesn’t use up rockets.
Building in the Sky and Parkour Fun
Minecraft | Mejoress
The Happy Ghast is good for more than just getting around. It helps a lot with building things high up. When you get to the height you want, get off the harness, and you’ll be standing on the ghast’s back – a great, steady place to build.
Think of it as your own moving platform.
Players who like to be creative will also find cool ways to use the Happy Ghast in parkour courses. You can tie them up so they don’t fly away, and, even better, you can put them in minecarts.
This lets you make moving platforms – like big, floating steps.
These are just some of the things we found you can do. We’re sure that Minecraft players will find many other creative ways to use the Happy Ghast.
The release date for the second game update of 2025 isn’t known yet. Besides the Happy Ghast, the update will also have a player finder, making it easier to find friends in your world. And Minecrafts first update brought more, cool stuff!
