Microsoft’s ‘Child of the 90s’ Ad is a Work of Beauty

This week, Microsoft released a perfect nostalgic trip back in time, to plug the newest version of its Internet Explorer, the default Microsoft web browser known by its iconic stylized blue ‘e’ with a band circling around it.

This was one of the best advertisements I’ve seen in awhile. It brought back a lot of memories for me, growing up in the 1990s – as a kid, it’s inevitable that life is simpler than when you’re an adult. But I just feel like times really were simpler back then even compared to kids growing up today. And this video does a great job, harkening back to those times of my youth.

I’ll admit, I probably won’t be switching back to Internet Explorer any time soon. I was a loyal user of it for a long time but by about 2008, I began using Mozilla Firefox and am just so used to it now, it’s habitual.

But that doesn’t take away from the awesome quality of this advertisement, its content and the way it delivered its message. The point is, this ad is very poignant and anyone who was growing up in the 1990s can and will easily relate to it. That nostalgia of the simplicity of youth is what makes it work.

Congrats, Microsoft. And thanks for the memories.
