Young men are being told by NFT promoters on TikTok that they can make and over $10,000 per week by pretending to be strippers in the metaverse. This is not true.
In many videos on the platform, customers are shown footage of expensive sports cars and piles of cash, which are said to have been earned by pole dancing in virtual reality.
One of these videos, posted by @holynft on TikTok, got over than 5.6 million views in less than a week.
“This is your sign to fake being a girl and start stripping in the metaverse,” a caption on the video states.
Since then, a lot of people who want to learn how to become VR strippers have left comments on the video.
“Please i want to join i would deadass do this,” one user wrote.
Even if someone is skeptical about the claim, @holynft will tell them that the project is 100% real. @holynft says that the only method of learning is to participate their Discord server.
The @holynft Discord server is full of people asking about the money-making plan, almost like TikTok. One user said he bought a new computer and a virtual reality headset for many hundred dollars so he could start stripping online.
Still, moderators on the forum send people somewhere else, this time to a Discord channel that explains NFTs. After the opening, users are told about the quality of the Discord server’s own NFT project, called Holy Nephalem.
Users have been flooding the Discord server with complaints since they found out they had been tricked.
“Came here because of the metaverse stripping click bait,” another user wrote. “Now realizing it’s just NFTs smh.”
Eventually, some moderators conceded in the chat that the TikTok video was just a publicity stunt, but they denied that the group was trying to trick users.
“Making money on the metaverse is real, but the stripping TikTok is satire,” one moderator said.
The Daily Dot tried to get in touch with the NFT group to ask about its marketing materials, but did not hear back.
It turns out that the videos on TikTok are not even from the metaverse. Instead, they are from a video game called VRChat.
Even though there are virtual strip clubs where dancers can get tips, a famous VR stripper informed Mashable last year that they didn’t even come close to making enough money to live on.
Even though it seems like a bad idea, @holynft isn’t the only one promoting the fake career path. The idea that TikTok users can make tens of thousands of dollars by stripping virtually is being pushed by a huge number of accounts on the site, many of which are about business and so-called “money-making hacks.”
