Story: Mermaids’ Lament starts when therapist Dr Nell Jamison (Mattos) discovers a young woman Oee (Escobar) wandering the streets. Her protective ways look to help Oee understand what is going on, while she tackles her own problems.

However, this case is different, as Oee believes she is a mermaid. Nell decides to use her skills to try and help unlock whatever is causing Oee to believe this. This ends up creating a unique bond between the two, as they both focus on solving their own traumas.

Verdict on Mermaids’ Lament

Mermaids’ Lament is a drama exploring two women’s traumas. It sees how they both deal with things in different ways and have come together to help each other. However, they need time to understand what they are helping each other with.

This gets to show us how people can process trauma in different ways. Including ways that not everyone would understand, but working together can find a middle ground. There is also a big message about how humans treat the oceans, which is reflected in the emotional levels Oee shows in the movie.
