The English Channel around St Malo is a sea of extremes. The high tides, legend says, come in faster than a galloping horse. Well, a strolling horse. OK, a strolling horse that takes a break every now and then.
Still, the endless sandy beach disappears in less than two hours. Fort National, which sits away from the walled city and is accessible by several footpaths at low tide, quickly becomes an island in the middle of a churning sea.
The waves begin to beat against the seawall, like medieval warriors scaling the sides of a castle. Relentlessly, they build to a crescendo and leap over the barriers, erupting into spray sculptures and dousing anyone on the boardwalk who hasn’t quite caught on to their rhythm.
Nature is clearly in charge here. And I, for one, just watched in silent awe.
