Via USAToday: Chris Kelly, half of the 1990s kid rap duo Kris Kross who made one of the decade’s most memorable songs with the frenetic “Jump,” died at an Atlanta hospital on Wednesday of an apparent drug overdose at his home, authorities said. He was 34.
Quick note: This is the first that I’ve heard it’s a drug overdose. If this is true, this is really sad.
Real talk, this blew my mind last night. Here I am having a nice relaxing hump day evening and BOOM, I get news that the Mac Daddy has died. I’m not even sure what to write about. How am I supposed to go to the reunion tour this summer? How am I supposed to buy their comeback album on iTunes? I’m so confused right now.
As I wrote a while back, Kris Kross holds a strong spot in my heart as their “Totally Crossed Out” album was my first ever album purchase in my life (tape) and I still have it today. Sad to think that their last performance was this one at the So So Def 20th Anniversary Concert.
Pour a little out for our homie Chris Kelly today. RIP
P.S. I may have been the only person to purchase “Young Rich and Dangerous” in the United States. I had this unhealthy complex of buying albums of artists I liked even though they were waaaaaaay past their prime. Even better, I’d love the albums even though they weren’t that good. I rode hard to the end. Real respect real bro.
