Meg 2: The Trench’ Review: A Viciously Fun Sequel That Jumps the Shark with Style

Posted on the 04 August 2023 by Jitender Sharma

“Meg 2: The Trench” is fun and it’s funny. It almost feels like a parody at some points but truly, it takes the best elements from the world’s repertoire of movies about prehistoric giants and turns the whole thing into a bombshell of entertainment. It’s gory, violent, dark, at some points, and yet is lighthearted. That is a good direction if not an accident.

Meg 2: The Trench is a sequel to the 2018 movie The Meg. And in a rare display of gore and comedy, this one manages to outshine its predecessor. British filmmaker Ben Wheatley has made a vicious film that makes you laugh – you might not want to believe it but it’s PG-13 rated.

Meg 2 has a tremendous body count with innovative ways of butchering people on display. It somehow hits the right horror-adjacent pleasure centers. Wheatley manages to keep the thrills alive by presenting shots from a shark’s point of view!

Jason Statham returns as Jonas Taylor in Meg 2. This time he has a stepdaughter (Sophia Cai) to protect. Surprisingly, the story accommodates more prehistoric creatures apart from the killer shark – land-roaming dinosaurs and a giant squid.

The film maker has made playful nods at films like “Jurassic Park,” “Jaws,” and “Deep Blue Sea.” The movie even goes so far as to have Statham’s character literally jump a shark, embracing the playful spirit with zeal. Watch the trailer for Meg 2.

The humor in the first Meg movie seemed studio mandated. This one has a more sparkling spontaneity. No dogs come to harm in the movie, making it a relief for animal-loving viewers. Although the film has a relentless madcap mayhem of blood and gore.

In conclusion, “Meg 2: The Trench” serves up an exhilarating and thrilling ride that surpasses its predecessor by embracing a darker yet humorous tone. Ben Wheatley’s adept direction and the talented ensemble cast, including Jason Statham, Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, and Cliff Curtis, contribute to the film’s success in delivering an entertaining and memorable killer-shark adventure.
