Meet Mia, My Andorran Trail Buddy

A fortnight ago, I was couchsurfing in Andorra with a couple who had two young, hyper cats and one older, mellow dachshund. The dachshund, Mia, turned 10 years old when I arrived (“Happy Birthday, Mia!”) and for some reason she took a shine to me. Is it because she knows I have a dog at home? I asked if I could borrow her as my trail buddy that day, and we set off for sights unknown.

I’m used to walking with a much bigger dog (Ice is 23kg) who usually bumps into me, not a dog I have to look around for because she’s low to the ground. I kept losing her in the grass and worrying I would accidentally step on her.

We had a great day of exploring forest trails, sheep meadows, and villages. She was very well-behaved, except for expressing a strong prejudice against joggers — particularly one who she chased twice, barking her head off (“Sorry! She won’t bite, she’s just loud!”).

To Mia’s credit, she kept up with me the whole time which is amazing considering her short legs, her advancing age, plenty of inclines, and a long day (around eight hours of walking). She’s used to travel, however, Mia’s originally from California and has lived in Spain, too. For a pooch who’s around 70 in human years, she’s a trouper!
