It seems that barely a month goes by without a looks-like-Hitler image hitting the internet and going viral. In March 2011 it was a semi-detached house in Swansea, Wales, which was widely felt to resemble the Nazi leader. That prompted Gawker to observe that, “It seems Hitler’s ubiquity is second only to Jesus when it comes to unexpected appearances in places he does not belong, like grilled cheese sandwiches, the facades of houses, and political discourse with Tea Partiers.”

The latest supposed Hitler look-a-like doing the rounds is a five-year-old common goldfish named George. The Daily Telegraph flagged up the goldfish’s “uncanny resemblance to the evil German dictator” in it weird news section. In truth, the only real similarity between Hitler and George is that George has a line of black pigment above his mouth which is vaguely reminiscent of Hitler’s moustache. However, George’s owner Deborah Cochrane, an office worker from Belfast, is playing up the similarities between her fish and the Fuhrer: “Like Hitler, George is vegetarian – he loves his peas – and of course the moustache.” She added: “Whenever I walk into the same room as George I notice he often has a fin raised and worry he is trying to indoctrinate me, but I am just being silly. Surely he is just waving ‘hello’?”
