McDonnell F3H-2N Demon

@ New York, NY

August 2018

During a 2018 trip to New York, I finally got to visit the USS Intrepid Museum. Displayed on the wet flight deck is this McDonnell F3H Demon. First flown in 1951, this was the first swept-wing aircraft produced by McDonnell Aircraft. The Demon was a carrier-based fighter supplementing daylight dogfighters such as the Vought F8U Crusader and Grumman F11F Tiger as an all-weather, missile-armed interceptor until retirement in 1964. The Demon was replaced by the F-4 Phantom and one can see some family resemblance. The -2N variant added Sidewinder missiles to the four 20mm cannon armament.
