An American Airlines MD-80 streams water as it comes in for a rainy landing at Colorado Springs Airport. The iconic polished aluminum skin on American Airlines’ jets, dating from the 1960’s, is now a distant memory. The MD-80 was first introduced to American Airlines in 1983, and it quickly became one of the most popular aircraft in the airline’s fleet. The last of the type was retired in 2019. American operated close to 400 of these MD-80/90 family in their fleet.
