October 2019

Taken during the annual San Francisco Fleet Week airshow rehearsal, Blues #5 performs a high-speed low-level pass. The shimmers underneath the “U.S. Navy” lettering are  transonic shockwaves generated during the pass.  First formed in 1946, the Blue Angels have been using the F/A-18 Hornet since 1986. These are usually the oldest jets in the fleet that have been taken out of frontline combat strike units as newer models are delivered.  The Blue Angels are tentatively scheduled to start flying the F/A-18E Super Hornet in 2021, the team’s 75th anniversary season.
