States are now in financial trouble. Dealing with the Coronavirus pandemic has been expensive for all the states. And since states cannot run a deficit (as the federal government can), they need some help from the federal government.
But Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says no to providing financial help for the states. He has even said (and repeated) that if the states are in trouble, they should just declare bankruptcy. Such a move would have dire consequences for those states, and for the entire U.S. economy, but McConnell doesn't seem to care.
McConnell was quick to provide giant corporations with a $500 billion slush fund. He has no problem with deficit spending when it comes to corporations. Why does he suddenly worry about spending when the states need help?
I think he's making a mistake this time. About 74% of registered voters say the federal government should help the states (including 65% of Republicans, 72% of Independents, and 84% of Democrats).
McConnell's stance is not going to help his party retain control of the Senate in the coming election.
The chart above is from the Politico / Morning Consult Poll -- done between April 24th and 26th of a national sample of 1,991 registered voters, with a 2 point margin of error.
