Netflix has made a significant acquisition at the Cannes Film Festival by securing the rights to the upcoming movie “May December,” starring Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore. The streaming giant paid an impressive $11 million for the US rights alone, with the film set to debut in December 2023.
May December had its premiere at Cannes and has garnered both public attention and critical acclaim ever since. The film has got an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. No wonder Netflix was quick to acquire the rights to it. In fact, they acquired it at Cannes itself. The Oscar-nominated filmmaker Todd Haynes has collaborated with writer Samy Burch to create this Natalie Portman and Julianne Morre starrer. The movie is set to debut on Netflix in the USA in December 2023.

The Independent reserved high praise for the film, writing, “May December is a film without frills or special effects. It’s a closely focused character study, galvanized by the tremendous performances from Portman and Moore, which delves into areas more conventional dramas don’t go near.”

The movie was shot in Savannah, Georgia, between October and November 2022. It has a runtime of 113 minutes. This profound study of the human condition that delves into one of humanity’s fundamental characteristics, cost Netflix $11 million for the rights in the USA alone.
Natalie Portman plays the role of Elizabeth in May December. It is her second collaboration with Netflix after her appearance in “Annihilation”. Julianne Moore plays Gracie in the film.
The thought provoking concepts that drive the film combined with stellar performances by Portman and Moore have earned this film high praise. It is a good acquisition by Netflix, no doubt. Whether it performs well enough to earn Netflix its money, remains to be seen.
