Sally Ride's Birthday, 1951-- Today is the birthday of Sally Ride, the first American woman in space. In 1983, Dr. Sally Ride became the first American woman in space on the shuttle Challenger. She was a mission specialist on STS-7, which launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on June 18. Source

Julia Pierpont Day-- Julia is credited with inspiring Memorial Day in May 1866, then called Decoration Day. Decoration Day was a day to repair and decorate the graves of the Civil War soldiers who had given their lives for their country. In 1882, the holiday’s name was changed to Memorial Day in honor of all who had given their lives for their country. Source
