Wright Brothers Patented the Aircraft-- In 1906 the Wrights received a patent for their method of flight control and fiercely defended it in the years afterward, suing foreign and domestic aviators and companies, especially Glenn Curtiss, in an attempt to collect licensing fees. The legal threat suppressed development of the U.S. aviation industry. Source

Crater Lake National Park Established-- Crater Lake National Park is the fifth oldest national park in the United States and the only one in the state of Oregon. The park encompasses the caldera of Crater Lake, a remnant of a destroyed volcano, Mount Mazama, and the surrounding hills and forests. Crater Lake National Park was established May 22, 1902 by President Theodore Roosevelt. Source

A Thousand Pioneers Head West-- On this day in 1843, some 1,000 men, women, and children climbed aboard their wagons and steered their horses west out of the small town of Elm Grove, Missouri. The train comprised more than 100 wagons with a herd of 5,000 oxen and cattle trailing behind. Dr. Elijah White, a Presbyterian missionary who had made the trip the year before, served as guide.
