In the past, Matt Kivel’s music could come out as rather humble and discrete, but the swirling feedback and distorted riffs of “Open Road” paint a rather different picture than the subtle acoustic strums on his debut album. The track was co-produced by Jarvis Taveniere and Jeremy Earl (who also plays guitar and sings back-up on “Open Road”) of Woods, who also – as told earlier – will release Kivels new record Days of Being Wild on their Woodsist label. Kivel said that he wanted the new album to feel more social; “something that reached out a little bit more to other people”. And while I do miss the patience and serene beauty that made his former album such a hypnotic – at once unsettling and beautiful – experience, it’s not easily repeated. I’m still very much fascinated to hear what the new album has to offer. Out July 8.
