Match of the Day has been named as the TV show that sends us to sleep, according to a new survey. The BBC football highlights show, which starts at a snooze-inducing 10.30pm on Saturdays and lasts over an hour, is the programme which most Brits nod off in front of.
Close runner up in the poll of 2000 adults was the 10 O’clock news, just ahead of the political debate show Question Time.
The study by hotel chain Premier Inn found that X Factor and animated sitcom Family Guy completed the top five respectively.
Channel 5 show Big Brother then followed, just ahead of the Sunday night favorite the Antiques Roadshow.
The poll also found the average person falls asleep in front of the telly at least once a week, with Friday evenings being the most likely time.
Completing the list of films was the panel show Have I Got News For You, The Graham Norton Show and long running soap EastEnders.
Similarly, the films that Brits fall asleep whilst watching were Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Titanic and the Hobbit.
In fact 28% of people said there are some films that they have never seen the end of because they always drop off.
A spokesman for Premier Inn said:
”Falling asleep in front of the TV is something we are all guilty of, even if it is our favorite TV show.”
Three quarters of adults said they know it’s time to go to bed when they start drifting off, and 19% said they argue with their partner over falling asleep.
Nearly a third said they often look forward to a night in front of the box but always end up zonked out, which often leads to the fall-outs.
The most common time to go to the land of nod is 28 minutes in to a TV show or film, and the latest time that Brits will start watching a show on a week night is 10pm.
But 21% said they often turn up to work exhausted because they have been up late glued to the telly.
In fact one in ten leave the TV on in the bedroom all night, and of those, 23% said it was because they are scared of the dark and 46% said they do it to keep them company.
A spokesman added:
”At Premier Inn we are committed to ensuring our guests experience a good night’s sleep guaranteed – so if Match of the Day or Question Time are tired Brits’ TV night caps, guests can tune in and nod off peacefully to enjoy a good night’s sleep.”
