Mascara Stain Removal: It happens: you put on your make-up for the day and suddenly the mascara wand slips out of your hand, bounces off the wall, rolls your shirt down and runs over the carpet. OK, maybe the scene isn't The dramatic. But we often have a stain of mascara that just doesn't move, even after we've repeatedly covered the stain with soap and water.

Fortunately, Carolyn Forte, director of the cleaning laboratory at the Good Housekeeping Institute, has a few tricks to remove stubborn stains from upholstery, carpets, and clothing - without having to throw them in the laundry. Some of these tips even remove waterproof mascara. All you need are some basic cleaning products that you probably already have in stock at home.

How to remove mascara from clothes

1. Use a makeup removal wipe that claims to dissolve waterproof mascara.
2. Place the stain face down on a paper towel.
3. Use the make-up cloth on the back to push the stain out and into the paper towel.
4. If nothing comes loose, rub in some prewash spray or liquid detergent.
5. Finally, wash as usual with a tissue-safe bleach.

How to remove mascara stains from the upholstery

Note: Use this method only for upholstery fabrics that can be safely cleaned with water. Otherwise, contact a specialist.

1. Mix ¼ teaspoon of detergent with 1 cup of water.
2. Use a clean white cloth to sponge the stain with the cleaning solution.
3. Dab until the liquid is absorbed.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the stain disappears.
5. Sponge with cold water and pat dry.

How to remove mascara stains from the carpet

1. Mix ¼ teaspoon of detergent per 1 cup of warm water.
2. Wipe the stain with the cleaning solution. Rinse with a cloth dipped in clear water and dab until the liquid is absorbed. Note: Work slowly and avoid overwetting the carpet. Mold can form on carpets that remain wet for too long.
3. If the stain remains, mix 1 tablespoon of ammonia with ½ cup of water - skip this step for wool or silk carpets.
4. Wipe the stain with the ammonia solution. Rinse with a cloth dipped in clear water and dab until the liquid is absorbed.
5. If the stain remains, mix a teaspoon of white vinegar with a cup of warm water. Wipe the stain with this solution. Dab until the liquid is absorbed.
6. Sponge with cold water and pat dry.
